Rick Stevens

Rick Stevens work is an exploration of color, light, texture and the poetics of space. Some of the work has recognizable subject matter, in others it’s not so apparent. Generally, there is a hide and seek with materials and subject matter. He uses oils often mixed with cold wax, gold leaf, sand and gauze mixed in wax along with pieces of burlap applied to the surface with gesso. All this helps to create a dramatic foreground/background relationship. He has recently returned to some plein air painting, but the majority of his work is done in studio.
