Martin Spei
Martin Spei is a figurative artist taking a contemporary approach to modeling and casting of sculpture that uses humor and irony to make socially relevant commentary. He sculpts people in the process of doing and working, capturing universal gestures that express and question compliance. These are not portraits of individuals, they are representative of past and present laborers with closed eyes, looking inward. The use of business suits, briefcases, and the like helps him to capture the context of societal norms while portraying a personal, inner dialog of an individual or group. Isolation or connection is also an important theme, both on the personal (person to person) and external (person to world) levels. Using a variety of media: bronze, iron, aluminum and rubber, his sculpture reflects man's connection with his personal capital.
